A MESSAGE TO ROTARY CLUB PRESIDENTS FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR BRIAN WHEATLEY: I commend to you this very significant initiative of the Rotary Club of Ballina on Richmond. The Club has been planning and working on the project for quite some time and through all stages has received my unqualified support. It is more than significant that Rotary International Past President Bill Boyd gave his immediate & unqualified support to the initiative and has agreed to attend as key note speaker. Past President Bill is indeed a very well respected representative of Rotary & a great supporter for the advancement of ethical principles, and behaviour, in every aspect of our lives. As Rotarians, every aspect of our lives should be governed by the 4 Way Test, for to do otherwise, brings great discredit to us as individuals and to Rotary as an organisation. At the 2007 International Assembly in San Diego, Carol and I had the very great privilege to be in the presence of Past Rotary International President Bhichai Rattakul when he delivered a very stirring and powerful speech on leadership and ethics. In that speech PRIP Bhichai said: “In a world where too many overlook the importance of integrity and ethics in business, politics, and their personal lives, the need to represent our vocation in Rotary, and Rotary in our vocation, is as strong as ever.
In
recent years, there has been a shift of ethical standards in the homes, in
business, and in the political arena that is rapidly spreading across
society and all throughout the wireless world in which we live. We see
abuses committed for personal gain, ego- and greed driven leadership and
conflicts for nothing but one’s own power. A fog that clouds those
sinfully minded people makes it difficult for them to comprehend that
their actions carry with them international ramifications. The Living Ethics Summit 2008 will focus on our behaviour in all of facets of our way of life. The Summit will reflect on the way we act, carry out business, deal with our clients, customers and family, the way we want others to treat us, and the values we hold. The calibre of the key note speakers will provide several different focal points for these discussions. The aim of the Summit is to improve the way we all relate in business with one another, across all environments and industries, and to foster an understanding of better ways to interact as a community. It addresses ethics in the community on subjects relating to sensitive and sustainable development, role models in business and sport, and cultural influences. It looks at ethics in the family, family values, relationships, social and moral responsibilities. Living Ethics is a project of appeal and application to the whole of society. I commend it to you all. Very kind regards, Brian
