Meets Tuesday at 6.00pm for 6.30pm start at Fiasco’s Restaurant, Parkwood Tavern, Olsen Avenue, Parkwood.

Bulletin for Tuesday 22 July 2008

From the President

Fifteen members and two guests attended last night’s meeting – thank you for braving the inclement weather!

A special welcome to our Guest Speaker – Dr Jeremy Dive and to Susan’s guest – Dr. John Murphy.

We are proceeding with plans to assist Arundel State School with some landscaping needs – a project started in Past President Mark Kent’s year.

We conducted another healthy fines session, with Sergeant Mark Kent asking questions about the Pope’s visit. Who knew that the Pope’s birth name is Joseph Ratzinger? President Allen Richards bragged about the birth of new granddaughter Pippa Elsee!

Members please note that next week’s meeting is a Club Assembly and I urge all to attend.

Allen

Medical Mission to KenyaCharmaine White leaves on September 20th as a volunteer participant with the Medical Mission being organized by Rotarians for Fighting AIDS – A Rotarian Action Group. Charmaine would like to take some gifts that would be useful to the local people – in particular non-prescription sunglasses and reading glasses with magnification. Also small gifts for children such as pencils, small balls, crayons etc will be accepted. Charmaine will be back at Rotary from July 29th to receive any gifts.

Rotary Toast

Rotary Club of Southport – Ken Smith proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Southport – who chartered our own Club.  Southport Club began in 1945 – when the Gold Coast was just a small town and everyone knew each other. Among other projects, this Club built the Youth Centre in Lawson Street.

Joker Raffle

Mark Kent conducted the Joker Raffle – with Margaret Grummitt holding the winning ticket – but alas she drew a King, not the Joker. The ‘pot’ will jackpot to next week.

Guest Speaker

Dr. Jeremy Dive talked to us about the importance of back care – as the spine houses our central nervous system. Jeremy told us that a disc injury can cause nerve damage – often affecting other parts of the body including vital organs. He urged us to take advantage of a FREE consultation to see if spinal problems could be affecting our overall health. He gave four case studies where chiropractic care has created huge improvements in patients’ lives. Phone 5571 1303 to take up this offer.

Old people
A farmer stopped by the local mechanic shop to have his truck fixed. They couldn't do it while he waited, so he said he didn't live far and would just walk home.

On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store and picked up a couple of chickens and a goose. However, struggling outside the store he now had a problem - how to carry his purchases home.

While he was scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, 'Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane?'

The farmer said, 'Well, my farm is very close to that house I would walk you there but I can't carry this lot.'

The old lady suggested, 'Why don't you put the can of paint in the bucket. Carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm
and carry the goose in your other hand?'

'Why thank you very much,' he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home.

On the way he said, 'Let's take my short cut and go down this alley. We'll be there in no time.'

The little old lady looked him over cautiously said, 'I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we
get in the alley you won't hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and have your way with me?'

The farmer said, 'Holy smokes lady! I'm carrying a bucket, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?'

The old lady replied, 'Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I'll hold the chickens.
