for 6.30pm start at Fiasco’s Restaurant, Parkwood Tavern, Olsen
Avenue, Parkwood.
Bulletin for Tuesday 19 August 2008
Reports of Meeting held on 12 August 2008:
From
the President
Immediate Past President Karyn
Joyner chaired the meeting in my absence, thank you. Nineteen
attended including Visiting Member Peter Lucas (St.
Leonards), guests : Dr. Jon Murphy, Jacqui Mengler (GSE
applicant) and guest speaker Megan Illmer from the Spinal
Injuries Association. Apologies from myself, Ken B and Teresa.
Sergeant Charmaine conducted a fun fine
session. Margaret bragged about her Award from the Police
Commissioner for her Contribution to Crime Stoppers (a worthy brag
and even worthier award!) Karyn bragged about the pleasure
she has had with her 13 yr old stepson visiting from the USA and
mentioned that Craig is enjoying Sydney. Harry bragged
about a rather dubious Olympic connection – his partner Kay’s son’s
fiancée is riding in the Equestrian team for Australia!
Heads & Tails was won by Margaret (who
left her bottle of wine for Mike B to purloin) and Brian Knowles
won the ‘number off’.
A reminder to Board members – Board Meeting

Guest Speaker

Guest Speaker Megan Illmer with Brian Knowles and Karyn Joyner
Megan Illmer,
Communications Officer for the Spinal Injuries Association,
spoke to us about SEAT (Spinal Education Awareness Team). Megan
started in her role four months ago after working as a journalist
for several years.
SEAT has been
running for 21 years in Queensland and in that time, the presenters
have spoken to more than a staggering 1.2 million children.
Longest-running presenter Wayne Leo has been with SEAT since day one
and in that time he’s spoken to almost a quarter of a million
children. He’s a volunteer, isn’t that amazing?
There are
currently 14 SEAT presenters, based in Brisbane, the Gold Coast,
Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Hervey Bay, Townsville, Cairns and
Stanthorpe. All presenters are volunteers. All of them say they do
it because if they save at least one child from ending up in a
wheelchair, then it’s worth it. In Queensland 90 people each year
have spinal injuries –that’s one every four days! Ongoing care can
be very expensive – around $800 per day at the PA Hospital in
Brisbane – around $12m for one person for their lifetime. Around 40%
of injuries are caused by road trauma.
The Spinal
Injuries Association promotes independence for all and provides peer
support officers, employment options and over 600 personal care
attendants in Queensland. In the last 10 years Queensland has the
lowest rate of spinal cord injuries in Australia. There is no cure
currently – so this prevention program is one of the best!

The
Cabbie & the Nun:
A cabbie picks up
a Nun.
She gets into the
cab and the driver won’t stop staring at her. She asks him why.
He replies “I
have a question to ask you but don’t want to offend you”
She answers “My
son, you cannot offend. When you’re as old as I am and have been a
Nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about
everything. I’m sure there’s nothing you could say or ask that I
would find offensive.”
“Well, I’ve
always had a fantasy to have a Nun kiss me”
She responds
“Well, lets see what we can do about that:
Number one – you
have to be single, and
Number two – you
must be Catholic.”
The cab driver is
very excited and says “Yes, I am single and I’m Catholic”
“Ok” the Nun says
“Pull into the next alley”
The Nun fulfils
his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush.
But when they get
back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.
“My dear child”
says the Nun “why are you crying?”
“Forgive me, but
I’ve sinned. I lied. I must confess, I’m married and I’m Jewish.”
The Nun says
“That’s Ok, my name is Kevin and I’m going to a Halloween party.”
