MEETING OF 12 JANUARY 2010

Cambodian travellers - Anne, Noel, John and Margaret
A selection of John's photos: (please click each to enlarge)

Cambodia: President John and Noel Grummitt were guest speakers and gave us a
wonderful insight into life in Cambodia with their addresses and series of excellent photos.
John and Anne visited historic Angkor Wat as well as Phnom Penh. They were amazed by the extent of water over the countryside. John mentioned the problem of landmines and the fact that last year was the first when road deaths exceeded those of landmines. Anne entered into the spirit of the trip with a cyclocart trip (photo bottom right hand side) and displayed some of her jewellery from the Markets.

Noel explained that he and Margaret had visited Cambodia in both the wet and dry seasons and the immense contrasts in the wet season with lush rice fields. Noel mentioned the landmine problem as well as the measures needed to overcome the extreme poverty, such as sewing co-operatives, training for clothing factories and work in Thailand. Noel exphasised the importance of education and the conduct of open air schools on mats with some participants only able to attend for a couple of hours each day. He mentioned the book - End of Poverty by the economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs: http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2007/s2233195.htm - also for further links:

Noel outlined the outstanding work of Dr Beat Richner in the establishment of Children's Hospitals in Cambodia: http://www.beat-richner.ch/Assets/richner_history.html

A round of applause indicated the appreciation of those present for such a worthwhile program.

Attendance: Ken B, Mike, Gary, Harry, Margaret, Brian, Paul, Bill, David, John S., Ken S. and John T.
Anne Tunnicliff and Noel Grummitt were welcomed as visitors. President John reported that
Doug and Jacqui were currently in New Zealand and that Jacquie was doing well.

Donation: The Board has approved a donation of $1,000 to Sails the venue of our Christmas function near Runaway Bay Marine which is used by a number of community groups.

Sgt-at-Arms: Mike Bottomley acted as Sgt. and extracted many fines for new year resolutions  as well as the birthdays of Brian Knowles, Fay Pavey and Gary Cummins.

Number Off:  Margaret Grummitt
Heads and Tails: John Smith
Raffle: Brian Knowles had the winning ticket but drew the Ace of Diamonds

Resignation: President John announced that the resignation of Bob Menzies had been received with regret.  Bob has heavy commitments with his publisher this year including overseas travel but he will continue to serve Rotary by assembling wheelchairs for the Surfers Sunrise Club. The best wishes of members are extended to Bob and Merilyn for their future health and happiness.
