Cambodia:
President John and Noel Grummitt were guest speakers and
gave us a
wonderful insight into life in Cambodia with their addresses and
series of excellent photos.
John and Anne visited historic Angkor Wat as well as Phnom Penh.
They were amazed by the extent of water over the countryside.
John mentioned the problem of landmines and the fact that last
year was the first when road deaths exceeded those of landmines.
Anne entered into the spirit of the trip with a cyclocart trip
(photo bottom right hand side) and displayed some of her
jewellery from the Markets.
Noel explained that he and Margaret had visited Cambodia in both
the wet and dry seasons and the immense contrasts in the wet
season with lush rice fields. Noel mentioned the landmine
problem as well as the measures needed to overcome the extreme
poverty, such as sewing co-operatives, training for clothing
factories and work in Thailand. Noel exphasised the importance
of education and the conduct of open air schools on mats with
some participants only able to attend for a couple of hours each
day. He mentioned the book - End of Poverty by the economist
Professor Jeffrey Sachs:
