Guest Speaker:
David Rolle introduced his daughter Kym to talk to us about  Art for Aid.   Kym  has embarked on an amazing mission to raise money for Aid projects by encouraging and empowering the local people to tell their stories and life experiences through art,  photography, painting, drawing  and  dance to name a few.Last year she went to Thailand to show the children how to screen print Tee Shirts and then sell them to make money. The other ideas are many and also she wants to make documentaries of these events so she can go to the richer parts of each country and encourage them to support these communities.  She does this by partnering with other community groups who are already established in the area.
Some interesting  websites she mentioned were
WWW Klong Toey and
The Global Poverty Project.
So much enthusiasm and dedication are great to see. Well done, Kym.

Attendance:
Apologies were received from Doug Thomas, Susan Tyrrell,
Harry Grace, Klaus Gross, Teresa Dawson and Ron Wilson.  (Ron, we trust you will be feeling fit and well for our big night next Tuesday)
Guests welcomed were Will and Kym Rolle, Mel and Chloe Irrgang and there was a special  welcome for honorary member, Ingrid Nielsen on a visit to Australia from Berlin.

The ladies were the centre of attention:
Left to Right: Honorary Member Ingrid Nielsen, Hilli Reaburn, Mel and Chloe,
daughter and granddaughter of Charmaine White

Rotary Youth Exchange Program: It was very appropriate that our first outward exchange student, Ingrid Nielsen, was present at the meeting when Paul O'Neill announced our resumption of participation in this important program of Rotary. We were pleased to welcome Ingrid looking so fit and  well and who is on a four month stay in Australia. Links to the history of
our participation in the program may be found here.
Paul announced that in the coming year we would be sponsoring Bridget
Judd, a student of Southport State High School, as an outward student, and
that we would be hosting Gull-Britt Hansen from Klaksvik, Denmark. Klaksvík
is the second largest town of the Faroe Islands. http://www.klaksvik.fo/

Gull-Britt is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Klaksvikar in District 1440.

Shelter Box Appeal Concert at Murwillumbah  next Sunday 14 March
Cathy Akehurst, President, the Rotary Club of Mt Warning AM comments:
We are holding a concert for Shelterbox on Sunday 14th of March. In the wake of the disaster in Chile over the weekend I think our timing could not be better.
Most of the performers are professionals who are donating their time so if we can fill the theatre we would be able to purchase  a few Shelterboxes.

More than 85 million children to be immunized against polio in 19 countries: More than 85 million children under age five will be immunized against polio in 19 countries across West and Central Africa in a massive example of cross-border cooperation aimed at stopping a yearlong polio epidemic. Nine of the countries -- Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Chad, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, and Sierra Leone -- are considered to have active outbreaks of polio (i.e., cases within the last six months). The campaign kicked off on 6 March in these countries as well as in Benin, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, and Nigeria. Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, and Togo will join at a later date due to political transitions or elections. This complex logistical operation is largely made possible by US$30 million in funding released by Rotary International.  Read more......here
