Another fabulous night of Rotary fellowship with Peter Lucas from St. Leonards with us again plus a big welcome to Nino Miano from Surfers Central – now at his “Little Volare” restaurant in Frank St, Labrador. Apologies from Teresa, Lyn, Ken B & Ron.

Sergeant Gary and helper Charmaine managed to fine folk for a number of things, including ‘badges & ties’ (so watch out for that one in future!). Heads and tails was won by John Tunnicliff and Bill Pavey won the numbering off. Congratulations to all!

Charmaine White stepped into the guest speaker spot – what a fabulous presentation – more about that later in the newsletter.

Guest Speaker
5 Aug

Guest Speaker Charmaine White with President Allen.

Charmaine White stepped into the guest speaker slot to share the details of her forthcoming trip to Africa.

Charmaine is leaving in September for a two week stint to the Mathare Slums of Nairobi, Kenya as part of an Australian dental team which includes 8 Rotarians.

Over 400,000 people live in Mathare, with only 10 toilet blocks for the entire population. There is no electricity and no sewerage. Poor hygiene, nutrition and the cramped conditions are major causes of the spread of diseases such as AIDS. In fact, Africa will have 25 million orphans by 2010.

Mathare has 70% unemployment and the area is rife with violence and gangs.

There are schools, some of them have standing room only. School children receive one meal each day (at the end of the school day in an effort to keep them there for the whole day). For most children this will be their only meal. Many children do not attend school as they have to look after their younger siblings. Many of the orphans in the area do not eat every day.

International aid teams, such as the one Charmaine is joining, alleviate immediate health issues and try to educate for the future. Charmaine told us that these people have simple needs – food, shelter and life!

A moving presentation from Charmaine, overwhelming our group with her dedication and humour!

Charmaine would still like to collect more sunglasses and perhaps small items for children, to take with her.

This one is in honour of Charmaine’s trip to Africa:

Old Dog

A Wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa, taking her faithful aged poodle along for the company.
One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, he discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a hungry-looking leopard heading rapidly in his direction.
The old poodle thinks, 'Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!' Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old poodle exclaims loudly, 'Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?'
Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike. A look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!' says the leopard, 'That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!'
Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. The old poodle sees the monkey heading after the leopard, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans, and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.
The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!'
Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?' But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet. Just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says, 'Where's that darn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!'
Moral of the story...
Don't mess with old farts. Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill. Bullshit and brilliance only come with age and experience.
