Bulletin for Tuesday 5 August 2008
From
the President
What a great night! Around 21
members, guests and visiting Rotarians. Apologies from Karyn,
Teresa, Craig, John, Ken S, Ken B, David, Klaus & Ron.
A special welcome to our guests –
Dr. Jon Murphy and wife Tammy. Visiting Rotarians Doug
McClelland, Peter Lucas and Doug’s guest Lionel plus a
thank you to our guest speakers from Sailability – Bryce
Wilson, Peter Overall and Stan Phillips.
Margaret Grummitt
came up with a fabulous idea for the landscaping of the new
Bravehearts facility. She has asked for the plants at the Church
of Christ (being relocated to make way for the new hospital) to be
donated to Bravehearts, with Rotary organising the removal and
replanting plus supply of additional soil and mulch as required. She
will be assisted in this by Mike B and David R. Thank
you for thinking outside the square, Margaret!
Sergeant Charmaine managed to fine many members and Mark
Kent and Mike Bottomley both bragged about their sons
graduating Uni this week. Congratulations to both! Susan
bragged about her daughter Jasmine getting her ‘P’ plates. Guest
Jon Murphy won the ‘number off’ (Tammy chose the red
wine) and Mike B won ‘heads & tails’.
Our
guest speakers were very engaging – more about that later in the
bulletin. Thank you all for your fellowship – contributing to a very
enjoyable meeting for all.

Finley, NSW –
Susan Tyrrell.
Susan proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Finley, her home town,
currently experiencing a third year of drought. She commented on the
large positive impact service clubs have in small rural communities.
Finley Rotary began in 1959 and are currently celebrating their 50th
year. Current President is David Lindeman and Secretary is
Stuart Nixon. One of the Club’s long standing members was
mentioned, Ellis Thornton OA,
age 85. Ellis has been treasurer for 12 years and organises the
Club’s main fund-raiser – ‘Bowls Day’ each year!
Joker Raffle
Mark Kent
conducted the Joker Raffle – with Harry holding the winning
ticket – however the Ace of Clubs was drawn. The ‘pot’ will jackpot
to next week – currently around $120.
Guest Speakers

Bryce, Stan & Peter from Sailability with President Allen.
Sailability Qld
offers “freedom on the water regardless of ability”.
Bryce, Stan and Peter introduced us to the
excellent work of Sailability, a non-profit international
organization now operating in 14 countries. It is run by volunteers
who organise their own fund-raising.
Their Tuesday
program – taking people sailing for 40 minutes each in a range of
purpose designed dinghies and keel boats under strict supervision
ensuring maximum safety at all times – was shown on a DVD. It was
heartening to watch (many of) these quite profoundly disabled people
experience the freedom and pleasure on the water.
One participant,
John Rynn, was born with muscular dystrophy and has spent his
entire 47 years in a wheel chair. His movement is restricted to two
fingers on one hand. Using battery assisted power a small joy stick
has been set up in an Access dinghy which enables John to sail the
boat on his own. After his first time sailing John spent most of the
night writing a poem on his electronic spelling board.
The sky is blue
The sun is out
On my own I am
sailing
I feel as free as
a bird
I love getting to
know the wind
I feel free of my
wheel chair
I can do
anything.
