  ROTARY CELEBRATES ITS 105TH ANNIVERSARY
During the first Rotary club meeting on 23 February 1905 in Chicago, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Hiram Shorey, and Silvester Schiele met to talk about their personal experiences. Harris then unfolded his general plan for their club meetings. This was the simple beginning of the world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago. It was appropriate that the toast to Rotary
International's birthday was proposed by Past R I Treasurer and Club Member,
Brian Knowles.  In his address Brian referred to these small beginnings to
the present day of 1,218,816 Rotarians in 33,170 Clubs in 532 Districts in 210 countries.
Rotary's top service goal is the eradication of polio worldwide. To date, Rotary has contributed nearly $US850 million and countless volunteer hours for the protection of more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.

Left to Right: Hilli Reaburn, Alexandra, Pauline Armstrong, member of
Southport Rotary Club and Counsellor to Ambassadorial Scholar
and President John Tunnicliff - see also News

Meeting of 23 February 2010:
Hilli Reaburn introduced Allie (Alexandra) Erickson who comes from Thunder Bay, Canada as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.  She is studying a Masters of Communication and Business at Bond University. She likes the PR side of the course the most.  She has participated in RYLA in Canada and also has been a member of her local Rotaract Club in Thunder Bay, Canada .
She arrived from -35 to +35 degrees temperature so she had more of a temp lag than jet lag.  She showed us an entertaining video of her home and we got to see snow shoeing,  ice hockey and how to make a snow angel.  Allie comes from District 5580 which has 64 clubs of which only 4 are in Canada  The rest are in the USA.
We all wish Allie the very best during her stay in Australia.

Attendance: There was an attendance of 22 with welcomes to visiting Rotarian Pauline Armstrong, Southport RC and Counsellor to Alexandra;
Alexandra Erickson; Jasmine Mikschi and Will Pavey. Apologies were
received from Gary Cummins, John Smith and Doug Thomas.

Death of Charter Member, Bill Stanford:
Members observed a period of
silence in memory of Bill who had been a charter member for a short period. The funeral will be held at Allambe Gardens on Thursday 25th February at 10am.

Guess who is coming to dinner: Brian Knowles reported on the success of the dinners held last week-end when all participants enjoyed the fellowship.
Brian particularly thanked the hosts for their support

Bald and Beautiful Day 5 May: Mark Kent reported that his committee was making good progress with arrangements. He will email members of the committee to confirm a meeting at the Sharks venue at 5.30pm one afternoon early next week.

Bike Ride Event: Mark Twyford is seeking an appropriate name for this event and in this regard asks members to put their thinking caps on. He is enthusiastic about the prospects of the event which will start and finish at the new Southport Parklands.

Car Show: Ken Smith is working on this proposal.

                                 Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships program. In 1947, 18 “Rotary Fellows” from 11 countries were selected to serve as ambassadors of goodwill while studying in another country for one academic year. Since that time, approximately US$500 million has been expended on some 38,000 scholarships for people from some 110 countries, studying in 105 countries around the world.
The purpose of the scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Scholars are expected to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country through both informal and formal appearances before Rotary and non-Rotary groups. Each scholar is assigned a host Rotarian counsellor to facilitate involvement in Rotary and integration into the host culture.

In addition to being an investment in the education of tomorrow’s leaders, Rotary Foundation scholarships create personal links between countries and are an important step toward greater understanding and goodwill in the world. RI Link
