6th Annual Rotary Kokoda Memorial Walk (RKMW6) Return to Local and District News
CALL GOES OUT FOR COAST KOKODA WALKERS This year’s Walk from Canungra and Carrara to Broadbeach will honour the few surviving Kokoda heroes and will take place on Sunday 18th April. 39th Battalion veterans, Walk patron Bill Bellairs and local resident Jim Stillman, will participate. Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke has encouraged all Gold Coasters to take part. “We are just two years away from the 70th Anniversary of the WWII Kokoda Campaign and this Walk is a wonderful way the community can acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the troops who served in Papua New Guinea,” he said. Walk founder George Friend said the timing of the 2010 event is ideal for those wanting to deliver their own ANZAC tribute. “For the many people who would like to march on ANZAC Day, but are ineligible or unable to for whatever reason, the Rotary Kokoda Memorial Walk provides an ideal opportunity for a personal commemoration,” Mr Friend said. “Whatever the personal motivation, we certainly encourage everyone to register as soon as they can and be a part of what has become one of the Coast’s most iconic commemorative events,” he said. Organised by the Rotary Club of Broadwater Southport, the route covers 24.5 kilometres, commencing at the border of Kokoda Barracks at Clagiraba and finishing at the Cascade Gardens Broadbeach Kokoda Memorial Wall site. All the stations along the Walk are named after significant places along the actual Kokoda Track and each one is dedicated to a Kokoda or VC hero. At each stop, walkers hear about the deeds of those men. Walkers can choose to participate in one or both stages of the event. The first stage is 14.5km and runs from Canungra to Carrara while the second stage is 10km and continues through to Cascade Gardens. All proceeds will be donated to the Rotary Kokoda Memorial Hospital in Papua New Guinea, Gold Coast Legacy and other Rotary (children’s) projects. Registration information including maps can be downloaded from the Gold Coast City Council’s website at www.goldcoastcity.com.au or people can phone Southport Broadwater Rotary on 0417 620 516.
