ROTARY CLUB of WISHART’S ACHIEVEMENTS

It is a pleasure to have you join the members of the Rotary Club of Wishart on this occasion.  We, as a Club are active in many different pursuits in both our local and overseas communities.  Below is an example of some of those activities.

1.             Community Service

Community service is a vital component of the Rotary Club of Wishart’s services.  Over the years, the Club has worked very closely with the Blue Nurses and more recently the Cerebral Palsy Association.

The Club was a major sponsor of the building of the new Centre in Whiteley Street, Mt Gravatt and therefore has the naming rights of the Centre.  Support services have included materials such as stairs and mirrors for occupational therapy; a hoist to assist carers to lift patients and a landscaped ecological garden.  Our work continues with Cerebral Palsy.

We actively support the Rotary Bowel Scan Project with the help of over 18 local pharmacies, which will help in the detection of the early signs of Bowel Cancer within our community.

Our Club is also an active participant in the local ABC radio channel where one of our members (for 15 years) has provided advice on valuing cars.  The same member has also annually addresses up to 300 Year 12 Mansfield State High School students about buying, driving, insuring and financing motor vehicles.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Wishart hosts a very successful Australia Day Ceremony where people from all different backgrounds, together with local service providers, members of Parliament and local Councils, their family and friends come together to become very proud new Australians.

The Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children Ltd (ROMAC) is also active within our Club.  Please refer to relevant brochures.

2.             International Service

The Rotary Club of Wishart has forwarded many freight containers to places such as Tonga, Fiji and Vanuatu.  Contributions have included computers, clothing etc.  We have also recently provided financial contributions to Rotary Clubs for projects being undertaken in Fiji with the provision of fresh running water for a remote village and Bali where the contributions  assist with the operational running costs of an orphanage.  We are currently organising to set up a simulated computer room at a remote village school in Fiji, so that the students will have a better chance of obtaining employment once they leave school.

Our Club, through Bob Lemon, has been very actively involved in the project called SCANN which is an orphanage in Kenya that assists boys to be housed safely.  With the recent civil riots occurring, this house was a haven for many children.  SCANN is a project that requires continuous donations through RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service).

3.             New Generations

The Rotary Club of Wishart works very closely with the Mansfield State High School Chaplaincy.  Over the years, we have held debating evenings with students and sought student support in some of our fundraising ventures.

We also have had quite a few exchange students over the years with representatives from South Africa, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Ecuador.   We have sent students to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Denmark, Germany, Turkey and Japan. This year we will be hosting an outbound student heading to Turkey.

We also support the Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN) which is a weekend programme for young people aged 15 – 18 years.  The aim of the project is to provide young people with a great sense of self-awareness, appreciate diversity in society and to realise their own and others potential and The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) which   provides opportunities for young people to be involved in a leadership  training camp to assist young people between 18 – 24 who wish to become engaged in some form of youth work or just to assist them with their future potential as young leaders in their field.

4.         Vocational Service

Vocational Service is the second avenue of service.  It is the banner by which Rotarians “recognise the worthiness of all useful occupations”.  Rotary acknowledges and recognises one’s vocation or occupation to fellow Rotarians to exemplify the characteristics of high ethical standards and the dignity of work.  Rotary Club of Wishart’s Vocational Month is October.

5.         Fundraising

Our Club is very active in fundraising and hosts two book sales each year plus many other fun activities.

Should you or any of your colleagues be interested in any of the above programs or wish to discuss other programs and options available through Rotary, please do not hesitate to contact our Club President or another member.

The Rotary Club of Wishart is also represented through the Youth Protection Officer which meets the requirements of working with young people in Queensland.
