5445 6119 European Economics explained Some
years ago a small rural town in Spain twinned with a similar town in Greece. The
Mayor of the Greek town visited the Spanish town. When he saw the
palatial mansion belonging to the Spanish mayor he wondered how he could
afford such a house. The
Spaniard said; "You see that bridge over there. The EU gave us a
grant to build a two-lane bridge, but by building a single lane bridge with
traffic lights at either end this house could be built". The
following year the Spaniard visited the Greek town. He was simply amazed at
the Greek Mayor's house, gold taps, marble floors, it was marvelous. When
he asked how this could be afforded the Greek said; "You see that bridge
over there?" The
Spaniard replied; "No." Guest Speaker: Neil
Costello was our guest speaker who gave us a “This is my life”. Born in Mackay, and
the family then moving to Cairns, Neil then found himself in Brisbane in 1950
and attending Brisbane State High where he joined a boys band and played
cornet for a period of ten years. During this time Neil received a
scholarship to study dentistry and this became his life work. Neil started
his working career by working for the state government and in Maryborough he met and married his lovely wife Helen.
They went to England for a year, came back to oz
and opened a small practice in Tenterfield. In 93/94 Neil joined Rotary and is an active
member of this Rotary club. Neil and Helen live in Caloundra with Neil
enjoying golf, fishing, reading and his small garden. |

President Pam’s Chit Chat: Good morning fellow Rotarian, lovely to have Vicki
Belcher, and Anne Kelly with us this morning. A very special welcome to our
Two special people, Deborah and Kia! Deborah we look very forward to hearing
your update. Christmas is
fast approaching, a very busy time for most. Loved hearing that some of our
members even held their family Christmas’s early. I am going to take a leaf
out of their books next year. Might even get the whole family together on the
same day!!!!!!! We held a Board
meeting last night with many new thoughts coming out of it!!!!!! I have received
a letter from a Rotarian in France, who is asking if any of our Rotarians
would like to host their son who is 22, and a Rotaracter,
for 2 or 3 months over their winter. I have sent it to you all in case
someone is interested. They would love to reciprocate. We are in the
process of putting a CD together about our Club and the Sunshine Coast. We
can then send it or give it to visitor to take back with them. Our Bookfest dates for next year have been booked. So keep
the 4th, 5th and 6th October free. Alan will have
more to say on ‘Carols on Kings” and the Golf day. Also do not know if we
have the dates for the first RYDA next year? Helen will be
back tomorrow, but asked me to let you know that the wine has arrived so you
will all have it soon. Please if you have not paid for it could you direct
debit to our Project acc. Or let Helen have a cheque
or money. I know Our
Rotary Club is very special to all of us. But it needs all of us to put our
hands up to do our bit to keep it that way. Please give thought to taking on
a position on the Board or even let Roger know what area you would like to
help in! I have had the wonderful support from my board and members, and know
you all want to do the same for Roger. Barry, Judy’s
husband has to have a PET scan today and surgery next week. Please keep them
in your thoughts. Next week we will
enjoy a Christmas fellowship breakfast. Have a GREAT
week, and look forward to seeing you all next week! Same time, same
place!!!!!!! Guest Speaker: Deborah from Helping Hands gave us a very thorough
update on what has been happening in Cambodia both before and after the worst
floods in a decade that have occurred there recently. Some interesting stats: 350 Toilets have been built 229 Have completed agriculture training 177 Are in the savings team 78 Have drip irrigation for their crops 2009 Bikes have been given out 91,000
Breakfasts have been served Dates to remember: 18th

President Pam’s Chit Chat: It was lovely to welcome everyone, especially Bob
Mclean from Glasshouse, and Ann Kelly, who is hoping to join our club, to
breakfast. What a lovely social
evening our Christmas Party turned out.
Barry and Judy certainly made it a night to remember. Thanks again to
both of them for all the work they put into it. It was lovely to see so many
festive looking members, but Gerry certainly put us all to shame! We had a very
successful BBQ at Bunnings. Thank you to all those
members that gave up their Sunday. It was nice to see almost $1000 go into
our bank. On a very cold,
blowy Monday, a number of our Club members, joined members from Cal Pac, to
welcome and enjoy fellowship and lunch with our District YEP students for
this year, who were heading of on their Safari. To thank us they all sang us
their version of the theme song from ‘ The Lion
King’! Bob Mclean, mentioned that their Club will also be donating to
Mental Health, in Jim memory. Just a reminder
to the Board, we have a meeting this coming Monday night. 5.45pm at Bendigo Board Room. This coming week
it will be lovely to see Deborah and Kia again, and hear all the news from
Cambodia! Remember partners always welcome! Hope you are all
having a wonderful week, and remember;
A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A WISH! Guest Speaker: Rotarian Bob Mclean from the Rotary Club of Glasshouse, gave us a very,
very informative, but also very humorous talk at times, on Prostate Cancer,
and how early detection can save your life. The latest data
shows that in 2010 almost 20,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Tragically more than 3,300 men died as a direct cause of this disease. Prostate cancer
is potentially curable if detected and treated while still confined to the prostrate gland. Early detection can be achieved via the
PSA blood test and the rectal examination(DRE) He could not
stress enough for every man over 50 to be tested. Dates to remember: 18th
December: Carol’s on Kings. |

President Pam’s Chit Chat: Once again a noisy, happy Breakfast on Tuesday! It was lovely to have Les Ponting with us from Cal Pac and my son Charles. One can see
Christmas is on its way with many of our members taking a break before the
silly season! There was not
that much to report, except our Christmas Party, which is to be held at
Judy’s this weekend. Our Bunning’s
BBQ on the 4th, and the lunch for the Exchange students on the 5th
Dec. We will also be at ‘Carols on Kings’ on the 18th. Helen would like
all Wine orders to her by the end of the month at the latest! Les Ponting,
has asked us to support their ROMAC project next year. They are once again
holding a Trivia night. Please remember
there will be no breakfast next week. Barry has a
surprise guest speaker on the 6th Dec, and Deborah Groves and her
beautiful son Kai will be with us on the 13th! On the 20TH
we are having a social club morning. Please remember we would love any
partner to join us any time! A thought for
this week! (Let’s see how many read it!) “When the power of love overcomes the love of
power the world will know peace!” Guest Speaker: Councilor Kerryn
Jones gave us an enlightening talk about the direction the Sunshine Coast
Regional is heading with their Corporate Plan for 2009-2014. The plan is the
blueprint for the future of this region. It outlines the emerging priorities
and key strategies that they will pursue to help achieve their vision of
becoming Australia’s most sustainable region-vibrant, green and diverse. Dates to remember: 26Nov:

President Pam’s Chit Chat: What a lovely
but touching meeting we had this morning! It was a very full program and I
thank Alf for doing such a wonderful job in the Chair. I would once
again like to say a big welcome to our newest member David and his wife
Christine. Hope we share many happy times with you both. Our meeting was
much enriched by the visit of so many visiting Rotarians from Christchurch
who are still doing it tough there, and friends from Cal Pac. I know we all
appreciated Gordon Watson’s heart felt but humour
filled talk on their trip to Gizo and Jim’s last
days. It was also very special to have Trevor Taylor to fill us in on the
work that was accomplished there by the team. Please let Helen
have your Wine orders, and please let me have numbers for the Christmas Party
ASAP if you have not filled in the list. Alan would love a few more on the
late shift for Bunning’s on the 4th Dec and come join the Rotary
Exchange Safari students for lunch on the 5th. One of our
visitors made a nice remark this morning. He was commenting on the noise, and
then added “But a noisy Club is always a happy, fun filled Club! That’s why
we always come visit!” A thought to
take with you for the week: Attitudes are
contagious…. Is yours worth catching? Guest Speaker: Gordon Watson and Trevor Taylor both gave us
an exceptional talk on the work that has been going on over in Gizo along with Gordons moving
testament of Jim. With no water, roads, paramedics and hospitals and only
vegetable gardening, coconuts and fishing as the main revenue for the people,
it must be a tough life and the help through Trevor and Rotary must certainly
be a help to them that we probably still don’t understand fully. Dates to remember: 26Nov:

President’s Report: Welcome to everyone and I would also like to thank Jacob, exchange
student from Sweden and Emma for being here this morning. I am not sure if we
will see them again before they take off on their Safari’s, so would just
like to take this opportunity to wish them well on their trips and do hope
you both have a wonderful time. I also have
wonderful news on another front. PP Helen has agreed to be Assistant Governor
for our District, in our area, for next year. We are thrilled and wish you
everything of the best for next year. Wasn’t last
Tuesday a fun day? A BIG thank you goes to Noel for organizing a very
successful Melbourne Cup sweep. Another great
Wine Tasting was enjoyed at Norm’s this past weekend. Norm does such a great
job, we have booked him again next year! Helen or Norm, I
am sure will have more on the wine orders later. As David Fraser
is unwell this week, we will be inducting him Next Tuesday. Also next week
Gordon Watson from Cal Pac., who was with Jim in Gizo,
has asked for a few minutes, to tell us a little about their short time up
there. I would like our
Club to donate $1000 to Rotary Health in memory of Jim. Polio Plus, has been in the news lately, and a member of our
Caloundra community passed away last week, wanting donations to Rotary Polio
Plus in lieu of flowers. We have already had donations. Please make a
note that we will not meet for breakfast on the 29th. Instead we
hope to have as many as possible at our Xmas function, at Judy’s home on the
26th of this month. It
will be a great social evening with our partners. An email will go
out soon with all detail. We will also
close for the Christmas break. We will have no meetings on the 27th
Dec and 3rd Jan. Alan, has a
roster for our Bunnings BBQ on the 4th Dec, as well as ‘Carols on Kings’ but will leave it to him
to fill you all in. Guest Speaker: Jacob (sweedish exchange student) gave us a very interesting
talk about his home country along with pictures, and Emma (Danish exchange
student) gave us an update on what she has been doing while in Australia. Dates to remember: 26Nov:

President’s Report: Lovely to be home again, only sad that we have lost one of our most colourful and loved members. Jim will be
missed by us all and I know it has not been an easy time for everyone. I would just
like to thank all those that stepped in to ease and help where they could. A
special thanks to Merv, Julianna,
Helen and Alf. I found a number
of letters of condolence to our Club on my computer when I got back. They
were from Angela Griffin and Mike, Ian Ruffles, (President of Samford Valley Rotary, one of their members Philipa Bensley was part of the
RAWCS team with Jim.) Ross Anderson, (President of Kawana
Waters Club) and Phil Whyte (District Governor District 9750) Thank you too,
Roger for standing in while I was away. Just a few
things before we enjoy our Melbourne cup morning! While I have
been away the Club has still been very busy. Thanks to those who helped with
the BBQ. The tranquillity garden looks well cared for again, and
everyone has done a great job selling Melbourne Cup ticket. I thought I would just arrive to help sell
the last tickets at Bulcock Markets, but when I got
there was told, Alan had been and left as all
tickets had been sold. Please see that Noel has all your money! Noel, thank you
for organizing our Melbourne Cup Sweep this year, I know it has not been
easy, with many of normal venues unavailable! Merv, has very kindly offered to take over as Treasurer.
Alf will be standing in for Ron as Membership director for 3 months, as Ron
will be absent for most of that time. We have
unfortunately had a letter of resignation from Ian Davidson. I am still
catching up, but hope our wine tasting is still this Friday night? And our Bunnings BBQ on the 4th December? All Board members, do not forget that next Monday night is our Nov
Board meeting. I have always
known I belonged to a very special Club but was once again reminded of it

A slide show of Jim ran during our beakfast President’s Report: PE
Roger gave the report and thanked members for their efforts during the last
week for RYDA, selling Melbourne Cup tickets and for the working bee at Tranquility Garden. The club needs a
BBQ organizer and called for a volunteer. Roger read out a card we had received
from CalPac passing on their club’s sympathy in
Jim’s passing. Merv also thanked the RYDA volunteers and
gave an update from Jim’s autopsy where the cause of death was a blocked
artery. Ann followed with a nice tribute to
Jim. Ian sought our views on a visit to
Parliament House on 17 November. Norm advised that it was Mens health week and reminded us on the importance of
regular checkups. Genta advised that the VTT trip to Japan
has been postponed until February. Noel does not want to see any Melbourne
Cup tickets returned ~ just show him the money. Seriously he needs all the
help he can get to sell the tickets as our venues have been severely
restricted this year. Guest Speaker: The
club enjoyed hearing from Barry and his life and career. From being a
bookmaker, restaurateur, winemaker, working for Hilton in various counties,
but all this worldly excitement ended once he had visited the sunshine coast
and fell in love with the place. After moving here Barry applied for a job at

sure it will go very well. We have been
asked to provide a BBQ for the spectators at the Dragon’s Abreast Nationals

There was no
meeting this week. Lighthouses, as technical achievements, purpose
built landmarks and symbols of hope have a special fascination. Amazing stories
abound involving the lighthouses, their keepers and the mariners and ships
guided by the lights Lighthouses were vital to the safety of shipping in
the late 19th and 20th centuries. There were a number
of incidents and not all stories have a happy ending. Caloundra Head’s juxtaposition of two lighthouses
from 1896 and 1968 span the era during which lighthouses reigned supreme on
the Australian coast. |

President’s Report: It has been a busy last week with our BBQ at USQ with thanks to Jim
and our crew of happy helpers who worked tirelessly. Next week our meeting
will be Monday evening with a BBQ at Leach Park at which our Rotary exchange
student Emma Larsen will be attending. Guest Speaker: The guest speaker this week was Darron
Shields from the Paraplegic Benefit Fund. Darron
enlightened us on “Life Beyond Bugger” Whether it’s an earthquake, accident
or illness leading to a serious spinal cord injury, life doesn’t always track
according to our master plan and we find ourselves quietly muttering
“bugger”, didn’t plan on this! Or did we? What
a positive and energetic person Darron is and
although your life can be changed in a split second that doesn’t mean that
there is nothing left. The PBF’s goals are Friendships, Partnerships, and
relationships. Directors’ Reports: Lauren Our exchange
student Emma will be staying with Ron for the next three months and her first

President’s Report: Helen gave her final report for the year and presented the annual
report 2010-11. She touched on the
fund raising events, club activities and social outings for the year as well as
the assistance given to both local and overseas organisations. It has been another good year for our
Club. A very successful Golf Day, the Bookfest, construction of the Tranquillity Garden, a
great variety of guest speakers and good vocational visits has ensured not
only retaining our members but an increase in membership. Helen thanked her Board and all club
members for making this a successful year. She passed on her best wishes to
incoming President, Pam, to the new Board and supporting committees. Helen presented 100% Attendance Awards to six members:- Jim Adam, Ian Belcher, Alf Muller, Ann Rattle, Roger Todd and Mark
Ward Lauren Rienstra and Jim Adam were awarded
Paul Harris Fellows Induction of new President: District Governor Carolyn Krueger inducted Pam who then introduced her
new board members. Pam spoke on the theme for 2011-12 “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”
and assured all members it will be an interesting year with a few surprises
along the way. *** Everything from the Atmosphere at the start of the evening to the Zing
still buzzing by the end, made for a very successful
changeover. The presentation of PHF’s
to Lauren and Jim, induction of our new President Pam, the service and food
by Rydges staff, of course the flowers and finishing
touch’s and catching up with old friends, were just
a few of the highlights. |
