Proserpine's townscape is dominated by the sugar mill that processes the district's annual 2,000,000+ tonne sugar cane crop into 285,000 tonnes of raw sugar for export. A stand of sugar cane represents that important regional industry. Also featured is the endangered Proserpine Rock Wallaby discovered by scientists in 1976 and identified as a separate species in 1982. This beautiful marsupial now exists only in isolated pockets of rocky habitat around Proserpine and on Gloucester Island. |
