This
first year of the second centenary of Rotary started off with a bonding
between the presidents of the group 7 Rotary clubs in District 9520. AG
Norm O’Flaherty arranging meetings for us to build this fellowship between
our clubs and to support each club in its activities. In
all 8 change over dinners were attended. Our
own was in the theme of Christmas in June and was a lot of fun. Our 2004-05 President Peter Flett
presented members with a souvenir mug, at what was his farewell dinner. Peter’s
transfer (through his work) to Hobart was a sad loss to our club but a great
advantage for the Rotary Club of Sandy Bay who have gained a new member. On
the 10th July we officially christened the BBQ in Nightingale Park with a
sausage sizzle. Mayor Steve
Woodcock and MP Joe Scalzi joined 8 of our members and partners and
representatives from other clubs, including DGE Bob Northcote and Meg. President of Campbelltown Rotary Club,
Peter Fowler and Alison from Burnside.
Food, Fun and Fellowship and our last farewell to PP Peter Flett, was
the theme of the day. This
provided the opportunity for us to recognise the assistance of our
neighbouring clubs with their financial assistance in the installation of the
BBQ. Further consideration was given to picnic tables and seating to
compliment the work already completed at Nightingale Reserve. Graham
Holcroft has liaised with Campbelltown Council to have a sign erected to
denote the BBQ facility. At
the time of changeover when we lost Charter member Cheryl Pressley and Mike Pressley, their resignations
were offset with the induction of new members Rosanne Vignogna and Mathias
Graf. This was followed by the resignation of Andrew Jones. With 3 members on
“Leave of Absence” and another member off sick we recognised that action
needed to be taken. A
membership drive (driven by Lindsay Davis) saw Rotarians from Magill Sunrise
out delivering pamphlets in a letter box drop. We took the opportunity to
think of our circle of friends and acquaintances and personally invited
potential members to join us at a special breakfast meeting. This was a great
success and has rewarded us with 4 new members having been inducted and
another one having committed for later this year. Added to this success we
have several contacts to follow up on as time passes on. It
is my belief that without this membership drive, which not only provided us
with new members, but saw older members rallying to the cause, our club would
have been taking a serious look at ourselves at this time. Instead we are
approaching a new Rotary year, with the theme “Lead the Way” with increased
membership, a rekindled enthusiasm and a lot of drive from the members to
support our direction. It
is my hope that this can be repeated each year, and this will provide a
future for the Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise. Tribute
must be paid to Lindsay Davis. Without the efforts of Lindsay in designing
our leaflet, and following through with costing, printing and co-ordination
of the “drive” and selection of our special guest speakers Jeff Neal and Jodie
Sloan for our breakfast, with all our special guests we would not have had such a
successful membership drive.
True, other members rallied and gave support to this project, but it
always takes a little extra from
one particular member to make things happen. On behalf of the Rotary Club of
Magill Sunrise I thank you Lindsay. One
of the highlights of the year, was the visit from DG Arthur Manser, on Melbourne
Cup day. Gary and Leonie excelled themselves with breakfast, horses, colours
for jockeys and a gold cup for the winning jockey. Not quite the traditional
visit a DG would expect, but a lot of fun. DG Arthur was asked to induct
Craig Sumsion into our club.
Craig and his wife Sandy a member of Campbelltown Rotary club have
become very active in the youth aspect of Rotary, even hosting Gabi, a
Brazilian exchange student. YOUTH
AND NEW GENERATION has been an area of growth this Rotary year. Under the
directorship of Rosanne Vignogna we have sponsored for the fist time a
student (Penny Butler) on long term youth exchange to Denmark. Emily
Cannon was selected to participate in the National Youth Science Forum in
Canberra, this year and presented well when visiting our club to report on
her experience. Chelsea
Green was our RYLA candidate this year. Kiah
Lanagan our RYPEN candidate. Through
Rosanne’s efforts we have established a strong relationship with Mary MacKillop
College. On the 23rd June 4 Rotarians attended Mary MacKillop to conduct mock
interviews with students. This exercise will be repeated later in the year. Interviews
are currently underway to select a student for the next NYSF. DISTRICT
CONFERENCE 2006. This
was the best District Conference I have attended. Our club was represented by
Mark and Julie Martin, Lindsay and Carol Davis and myself. The conference was
held in Broken Hill and the hospitality of the locals, the quality of the
guest speakers and the warmth of the organising committee the DG and everyone
involved made it a great conference. 10th
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS This
was a wonderful occasion to reflect on the history and growth of our club
since its charter on 14th May 1996.
We were joined by Past DGs Alan Lawrie, John Jackson and their wives.
DG Arthur Manser and Shirley, DG Elect Bob Northcote and Margaret, AG Norm
O’Flaherty, PP Tony Giannone, Charter Member Cheryl Presley and Mike and many
others, alongside present members, families and friends, including members of
Morialta and Campbelltown Rotary Clubs. Thanks to everyone for making an
effort and making this such a momentous occasion. FUNDRAISING. I
am pleased to report that we are handing our clubs financial standing on to
the new committee for 2006-07 in a very healthy state. A)
our monthly commitment at the Campbelltown Shed sale, which we have attended since Teresa Leonardi’s
reign as President, has brought in a regular income. This has been organised and co-ordinated by Graham
Holcroft and Honorary Member Robyn Holcroft. 8 members give their time
voluntarily (as is the way of Rotary) on the last Saturday of each month to
cook a BBQ for Campbelltown Rotarians. We have lots of fun and fellowship
whilst raising funds for our club. B) Film Night “Must Love Dogs”
was the brain child of Lindsay Davis. This was held on 5th October
2005 and was a great success.
This night was supported by other Rotary clubs in the Group 7
District. C) Quiz Night on June 3, was an enormous
success, raising $1,817. Our club thanks must go to Quiz Master and MC Mark
Thompson and Marie (even if the questions were too hard). AND to Rotarian
Rosanne who filled half of the tables with her friends/colleagues. AND to all
who gave their support. D)
Other monies raised came from Christmas Cakes and Puddings, Christmas Cards,
Magill Sunrise Wine, raffle tickets with Rotary Club of Norwood and participation
in Norwood Rotary Clubs Fund Raiser “Dad’s Army”. Another example of our
bonding with the other Group 7 clubs. RAWCS Magill
Sunrise was awarded a SILVER certificate of support from Rotary Australia World
Community Service, acknowledging our club’s contribution to the “Save Water
Save Lives” programme. RAM Our
club contributed to the Mosquito Nets programme, adopting the village of
KOMUVAOLU in the Guadalcanal
Province of the Solomon Islands . This contribution helped to send 2
containers of Mosquito Nets to Honiara in the Solomon Islands, providing 25,000
bed nets for distribution. DIK
A
small group of us ventured out to Salisbury to help out on 5th November 2005.
Sadly
the second club trip planned for June 17th was cancelled as only 4 volunteers
came forward. My
own involvement with DIK has been through the ALOLA project, raising goods to
fill a container, and the $s to send the container to Deli in East
Timor. Many clubs have supported
this project by sewing baby wraps, donating clothing and money to be forwarded
to the Alola Foundation in East Timor under the guidance of Kirsty Sword
Gusmao who was a keynote speaker at the 2005 District Conference in Port
Lincoln. AG Norm
O’Flaherty. Graham and Robyn Holcroft have assisted at DIK with the packing of
the shipping container, and members and partners such as Mark Thompson,
Annette Webb, Rhonda Holbruin (St. Peters club) Miriam Tonkin, Heather
Mottteram (Adelaide Club), Maggi Day and others have been indispensable in
the achievement of this project.
THANK YOU, one and all. GUEST SPEAKERS
We
have enjoyed a busy programme of speakers this year. We
started the year with Youth Exchange Student Michael Peterson, from Denmark. Matthew
Davis and Russell Webb (our Ryla attendees) did a joint presentation at our
club, and then at Campbelltown Rotary club. Emily
Cannon (National Youth Science Forum Candidate) Penny
Butler (our YES to Denmark) prior her departure to Denmark for 12 months. Chelsea
Green from Campbelltown Council and later our RYLA candidate 2006. Kiah
Lanagan our Rypen candidate from Mary MacKilllop College. Other
guest speakers include, Derek Hunter, Chris Horsmann, Trish Newman
(physiotherapist) Christine Baker (Madagascar), Ron Day (wine industry),
Jodie Ensor (Mud drum) and Jodie Sloan (GSE). Rotarian

Wagner and Joseph Romeo (Edge), Dennis Henschke (past DG) and Owen Bevan (Rotary
Club of Stirling). Behind
the Badge Speakers: Brenton
Oates, Rosanne Vignogna, Craig Sumsion, Carsten Friedel, Bill Northrop and
myself (Maureen O’Flaherty) on the ALOLA project. Plus Wayne Abbott on the Rotary Foundation. Our
last meeting for the year
(Meeting No 483) we concluded the year with our Christmas in June
theme. My thanks to Gary
and Leonie and to all the members who joined in, in the manner of fellowship
and fun. In
conclusion I would like to express my appreciation to members who have exemplified
our theme for the 2005-06 Rotary year and truly exhibited “Service above
Self”. These members who
have exceeded the expectation of a Rotarian, in alphabetical order are
Lindsay Davis (membership drive and Treasurer and Foundation subsidy), Graham
and Robyn Holcroft (BBQ) Bronwyn Hyder (attendance), Mark Martin (Bulletin),
Mark Thompson (Secretary), Rosanne Vignogna (Youth and New Generation and her
work with Mary MacKillop College) ………without these members my year as President
of the Rotary club of Magill Sunrise would not have been the success it has
been. It
is with anticipation that I hand over to President Kevin Webb for the 2006-07
Rotary Year. I wish Kevin every
success and offer my support. Maureen
O’Flaherty. President 2005-2006 |
