Building, rigging and sailing a Firebug sailboat.

The Firebug, the boat, is a 2.4m (8’) family fun yacht. It has been designed to be home built by amateurs at moderate cost and to be suitable as a trainer for children and adults, for racing, or just as a knockabout sailing boat for the family.  The ‘build it yourself’ part is intended to foster amateur boat building skills.

The Rotary and Lions Clubs of Goolwa in conjunction with the Goolwa Primary School and Investigator College have been cooperating to provide a number of such boats for the school children of the community.

Presently The Rotary Club of Goolwa has purchased and provided a kit to the Investigator College and Rotarians are working with students to construct to craft.  Together with others in progress it is hoped to commence sail training with students in the 2007/2008 summer season.

The Rotabug was finally completed in June 2008 and placed on display at the Changeover dinner.

Refugee Holiday Program Assistance

Following a recent speaker presentation by Gaynor Jones and Sylvie Cleret about the Anglican Church program to assist refugee families the club has financed the holiday accommodation for the September/October session with a donation of $325.

Members also offered specific assistance with outings for the family which resulted in a picnic outing on the Milne’s Myee on the river, a picnic barbecue on the marina lawns provided by members of the club through the courtesy and assistance of the Marina Hindmarsh Island.  The Sudanese refugee family including parents with their six children up to the age of ten enjoyed the day concluding with activities in the playground before returning to the Goolwa wharf.

A second Sudanise family was assisted on 20 April 2008 with a picnic lunch.  Mother Mary, and the children, Buol, Kenny, Chol, Garang and Khenis, aged from six to eleven were collected from the holiday house and taken to the playground adjacent Rankin’s Landing on Hindmarsh Island.

President John, Patricia Milne and Lyn Mateer busied themselves unde the shade of the trees providing, sandwiches, cold chicken, fruit, water and rock melon, ice-creams etc.

Great Murray Lakes Clean UP – 6 April 2008

Taking advantage of the extremely low river levels a clean up was coordinated by many local businesses and group.  Rotary took its part adjacent the bridge on Hindmarsh Island side.  Substantial rubbish and debris was removed to make the river a safer place when the water levels restore.

Donation in Kind – Working Bee, 20 April 2008

Some 16 Rotarians including members of the Brighton Club attended the Salisbury based DIK Warehouse and were amazed at what confronted them.  The massive operation receives goods from all over, ensures appropriate operability, match available stock to declared needs and ultimately ships to respective recipients by the container load.  Rotarians undertook a variety of tasks, including book sorting, rubbish dumping, unloading old electric wheelchairs, repairing non operational lights in a workroom (licensed electrician), etc.

Manager’s emphasis was focused on getting useable goods to those in need rather than spending time on neat and tidy.

Pride of Workmanship – 14 April 2008

The club had the opportunity to highlight Sharon Seys (centre) and Leah Grace (centre right) for the contributions to business in our area.  Local artist Brenda Holden (centre left) addressed the meeting on the significance of Pride of Workmanship to a successful business.  Rotarian Karen Pipe (right)was acknowledged for her coordination of the award ceremony.

Coordinated by Rotarian Nanette Davis, community members were encouraged to attend free screening held over four days at the local Priceline and Chemmart pharmacies.  The program was judged successful by the number of participants and the percentage identified as at risk and advised to seek further investigation with their GP’s.  The service was publicised by Rotary.

The screenings were supported by the Goolwa Medical Centre including medical student Brigid Brown, Diabetics Educator Fiona Crouch, The Flinders University Rural Clinical School and the Goolwa Shopping Centre.

Uplift Fiji

Rotarian Lyn Harris is coordinating collection of second hand bras to be sent to Fiji.  Used items are preferred or there are complications with duty.  Appears there is a desperate shortage of such items due to high cost for purchase by locals.

Roadside Clean Up

In support of the KESAB programs the club has adopted the section of the Goolwa to Victor Harbor Road from Beach Road to Traeger’s property.  We conducted a successful clean up on 7 June 2008 collecting about 30 bags of rubbish for the dump.  Council support is acknowledged by waiving dump fees for the exercise.
