PLEASE CHACK WITH PAST PRESIDENT JOHN TURNER BEFORE TAKING ANY ACTION ON THIS ONE.

Amazing Brain – Ian Gibbins

Ian spoke to the club on 19 May 2008 and indicated that it would be possible to arrange an evening at the University and see some of the work they do at first hand.  This could be instead of our normal meeting or at some other time agreed with the board.  Should be able to negotiate a sandwich, nibble and coffe snack at the University.

Outline CV

Ian Gibbins was originally trained in Zoology at the University of
Melbourne, where he got his PhD in 1981. After a couple of years in the
USA, he came to Flinders, where he has been Professor and Head of the
Department of Anatomy & Histology since 1993. He teaches extensively in
functional anatomy, neuroscience and embryology. He also has
coordinated major components of the medical program, and more recently
a Graduate Certificate in Neuroscience (Learning). In addition, Ian's
research uses combinations of microscopy and electrical recordings to
investigate the nerves that control and measure the activity of the
internal organs. Outside work, Ian windsurfs, writes poetry,
experiments with electronic music, and cooks, depending on the
prevailing conditions. Over the last couple of years, he has become
interested in the cultural history of anatomy and its place in emerging
science of early modern Europe, which has led to new collaborations
with artists.
