The RAAF Memorial Gardens
-
The Club is participating in an
exciting and substantial project to erect a memorial near the RAAF Museum at the Mildura
Airport to commemorate the personnel killed in training in Mildura.
-
This project was conceived by Rotarian Jim Moore as a natural flow on to compliment
the Avenue of trees. A small committee comprising Jim Moore, Jim Kane, Milton Whiting and John Harrison was formed
to drive the project
-
Initially only one monument was to be erected near the RAAF Museum to commemorate the 57
Airforce personnel killed
in training in Mildura during the Second World War. However following meeting with representatives
of the RAAF Museum, the Airport Advisory Committee and the Rotary Club of Irymple an extended concept
was developed to include memorials to:
- Those who died at Mildura (57)
- Those from Mildura who died in other lands (58)
- Those who trained in Mildura and died in other lands (270)
-
A bronze statue of an airman with a parachute is to feature along with the three monuments. The costs are in
excess of $54,000.
-
The RAAF Museum Committee has preformed magnificently in sourcing funds form local, state and
federal governments and organizations. Funds have also been contributed by families of those
lost in action. The funds are now in hand or pledged to complete the project.
-
Contracts have been signed by the sculptor and the stonemason with the work to commence
in late August 2006. Completion is anticipated early in 2007. Considering that the first meeting was held in February 2005
completion of the project within a two-year period is a great effort.
