Citizen of the Year 2011

During the year our local communities of Irymple, Red Cliffs and Cardross were severely impacted during the year by the water inundation from wild district storms.

The Mildura Chapter of the State Emergency Service played a major role, well beyond expectation, in emergency and reconstruction of services to the many residents whose lives were severely disrupted.

The Club was pleased to acknowledge the work of the Service by presenting the Chapter with the Rotary Citizen of the Year and contributing to funds to support SES member’s facilities.

President John Fitzgibbon presented Michael Hellwedge, Chief Officer of the Mildura Chapter at the Club Meeting on Tuesday 31st May.

Vale Milton

Early in 2011 we recognized the passing of a long-serving member of our Club – Honorary Member Milton Whiting.

Milton was a man of who never sought words of praise. He never sought gifts or payment as rewards for his work. He was always a quiet man whose actions spoke much louder than words and who took as his reward the knowledge that he made a contribution.

He involved himself in a wide variety of community activities and groups. He became a respected leader that culminated in him representing his community as their elected representative for many years.

As a Member of the Victorian Parliament, Milton was first and always – a local member.

Among the ways in which his service was recognized, Milton was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

The greatest personal honour the Rotary Club of Irymple can bestow upon a member is the awarding of a Paul Harris Fellow. Milton was awarded his with acclaim.

We were all saddened by the news of his calling to a higher service.

Farewell Ted!

We were all greatly saddened by news of  the death of a much respected Rotarian Ted Crane as we were meeting on Tuesday, 28th June.

Ted was inducted on 28th November 1978 and was a past-President and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Ted was awarded an Australia medal for his service to the State Emergency Service, the Army Reserve and the Community.

Most of  all he was a  gentle  person and a tireless worker for a  good cause. He exemplified the theme of Rotary “Service Above Self”.

Our Club motto "By their fruits you shall know them" could have been written for Ted. Even now in his absence we are discovering examples of his good works that he carried out quietly and without fanfare.

Ted has struggled with ill health for a long time and  he is a great loss to this club and this community.

We extend our condolences to Eleanor and his family.
