Lifeline SA - $5,000 per
year for 3 years to train 10 telephone volunteers each year.
Lifeline
was founded in 1963 by the late Reverend Dr. Sir Alan
Walker, when he took a call from a distressed man who later
took his own life. Sir Alan launched a 24-hour crisis
support line which today answers more than 1250 calls each
day, with about 50 calls from suicide related attempts.
Lifeline is a not-for-profit organization and its services
are supported by 1000 staff and 11,000 volunteers operating
from 60 locations in Australia. Its services and resources
are provided through phone, face-to-face and online.
In 2009,
there were 2132 suicides in Australia (6 per day). This is
likely an under-report. Suicide is the leading cause of
death in Australia for men under 44 and women under 34 years
of age. During the same period, there were 1837 skin
cancer-related deaths and 1151 road accident-related deaths
(Aust. Bureau Stats.). Lifeline’s national service programs
focus on Crisis Support, Suicide Prevention and Mental
Health Support. In 2011, the Rotary Club of St Peters Inc.
made a commitment to support Lifeline Adelaide with
scholarship funds to train twenty counsellors annually.
