Eleven visitors from Ipoh in Malaysia attended our
meeting last Monday evening. They comprised five Rotarians,
their partners and one son and they attended as part of a
five day visit to Campbelltown. During the meeting, our
President, Tony Lagozzino and the President of the Rotary
Club of Ipoh, SY Lee, signed a joint Certificate of
International Friendship. This certificate sets out the
formal details of the new sister club arrangements between
the two Rotary clubs. The objectives of the sister club
relationship include the establishment of a special bond
between the two clubs and it is intended to promote
friendship and to lead to
|
planning for a mutually acceptable joint project.
Benefits will also include fostering goodwill and better
international understanding between the two countries
through fellowship.
The District Governor of Rotary District 9520, Arthur
Robinson witnessed the signing of this agreement. He also
welcomed the visitors from Ipoh and he spoke about how he
saw that the sister club relationship will provide the
opportunity to continue to grow for many years and he wished
it well. Gifts were also exchanged between the two
clubs.

Good Tidings from our Sister Club, Ipoh
Fee Chin introduced our visitors to the Club by
telling us about Ipoh (pronounced e-poh). It is Malaysia's
third largest city with more than 500,000 people and is
about 200 km north of the federal capital city, Kuala Lumpur
and some 150 km south of Butterworth and Penang. Ipoh is the
capital of the State of Perak (the silver state) and is well
known for its old town Chinese and British colonial
architecture. Jungle-clad limestone hills with many famous
caves are nearby. The city's original wealth came from the
nearby tin mines and it is sometimes called the tin city.
While the tin industry is now fading, Ipoh has grown with
the country's economy and it is poised to become a focal
point of industry, business, investment, education, and
social activities. The city's name is from the Ipoh tree
which produces the poisonous sap once used by the original
tribes to make fatal darts for their blow pipes. This tree
is now becoming scarce and therefore, as a special project,
the Rotary Club of Ipoh has planted a single Ipoh tree in
front of the architecturally significant and famous Ipoh
Railway Station.
The President of the Rotary Club of Ipoh, President SY
then told us about the history of his Club and how it was
formed in 1929 and is one of the three oldest Rotary clubs
in Malaysia. When Rotary International is celebrating its
centenary in 2005, Ipoh will be celebrating its 75th
anniversary. While the Ipoh Club has no female members, the
partners are very active in Club activities. President SY
brought good tidings from Malaysia and Ipoh and he spoke
about the value of being ambassadors of goodwill and how
they looked forward to learning more about Adelaide and
Australia. They especially looked forward to exchanging
ideas about culture, religion and history. SY then presented
Campbelltown with a special Ipoh Rotary bannerette.
Chris Gascoigne thanked SY for his talk and
presented him with a classic Australian bush hat embossed
with the Campbelltown Rotary badge. In return, all the Ipoh
visitors, lead by choirmaster Yoong Kim, sang several
wonderful Malaysian songs.
