President Bob's Final Observations

It is a pleasure to summarise the achievements of this Club during the past year.

Membership Development brought five new members into the Club, while Fellowship organised a wide range of very enjoyable activities.

We set an ambitious goal of raising $80,000, and the Fundraising Committee achieved it:

  • with the second hand goods Shed raising over $32,000 net after expenses;
  • the Rotary Outback Experience (CROE) team have raised $23,000 in direct donations;
  • the Carnevale team made nearly $6000;
  • the Art Show contributed $7000, and
  • many other items, including sale of goodies and Newsletter advertising, contributed about $13,000.

Community Service spent funds on:

  • an Indigenous Health Scholarship;
  • the rice project with FoodbankSA;
  • the Athelstone CFS;
  • and other smaller projects;
  • $4000 was given to the ARHRF via CROE and other direct donations;
  • the committee also initiated a Road Watch project on Montacute Road, and
  • undertook planning for the Rotary Centennial Community BBQ Project to be built at Thorndon Park.

New Generations placed young people in various youth activities, including:

  • the Science forums;
  • EDS IT Forum;
  • RYLA for young adults, and
  • ran a RYWELL camp for several young people at risk.

Vocational Service organised:

  • several vocational talks by members;
  • vocational visit to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade;
  • vocational visit to The Parks Community Centre, and
  • arranged the presentation of a Rotary Award for Vocational Excellence, and
  • arranged the presentation of a Pride of Workmanship Award.

International Service supported many projects, at a cost of $15,000, including:

  • sending two containers of used school furniture and books to Donations in Kind;
  • repaired electrical typewriters to be forwarded to Donations in Kind;
  • bought four solar water purifiers to provide drinking water through RAWCS;
  • obtained a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant to redevelop a school in India, jointly with the Rotary Club of Madras Pallava;
  • supported a GSE team member to Canada/USA;
  • made donations to the Bam, Iran earthquake;
  • made donations to the Fred Hollows Foundation;
  • made donations to Interplast;
  • planned a youth exchange project with our sister Club in Ipoh, Malaysia, and
  • gave, with CROE, $7500 to The Rotary Foundation.

Our income was disbursed with:

  • $28,000 spent on the service projects above;
  • $15,000 to the RFDS;
  • $24,000 on Shed development costs, including loan repayments of $20,000;
  • leaving about $14,000 to be carried forward for the Thorndon Park project.
  • We now owe less on the Shed than we have cash in the bank!

Through the combined efforts of all members of this club, our partners and friends, we have been awarded the RI Presidential Citation for the year. I thank everyone for accomplishing a great deal while Lending a Hand in Rotary this year. In so doing you have provided further evidence of the quality and breadth of the capabilities in this, the Rotary Club of Campbelltown. Finally, Bill and Renata Allan have done a truly outstanding job on the Newsletter for two long years - I congratulate and thank them for their great contribution to the Club.

Immediate Past President Bob Northcote

John Bennett - Paul Harris Fellow:
John Bennett
was inducted into the Club on 5th October 1987. He was Club Secretary in 1994-95 and Membership Chairman for 1996-98. John has supported our annual bowls night at Tranmere Bowling Club since the early 1990's and became co-ordinator in 1998. Whenever the Club has had a requirement for transport to a special function, John has always been willing and able to arrange bus transport, such as for Club Christmas dinners at Mt Lofty House and North Plympton in 1989 and 1990, progressive dinner at Waterfall Gully in 1999, McLaren Vale wine tour in 2003, along with GSE team visits and many other occasions. John has also been involved with the transport arrangements for many international students and has been directly involved in the home hosting of some of these students. John Bennett becomes a Paul Harris Fellow for his commitment to the Club and to our common goals of achieving world understanding and peace.
Congratulations John.

Bill Allan says thanks: This is my last week as Editor. It has been a pleasure to have produced the Newsletter, mainly thanks to the many Rotarians and Newsletter readers who have so ably assisted in providing valuable information. Renata has also been fantastic is providing help in many ways. I wish Dick Johnson all the best in his new role as Editor for 2004/2005.

Silver Friends of the ARHRF: In recognition of the generous contribution of $1000 made by Shirlee and Tieneke Inkenharg, they have been made Silver Friends of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF). The capital in this fund is invested indefinitely with the ongoing annual interest being used for special research projects. In receiving the award, Shirlee spoke of the health challenges now confronting many Australians. Her husband, Theo, now deceased, was our second President, in 1967-68. The ARHRF supports research into many health fields, including mental health, and it also manages the Indigenous Health Scholarships (Peta Jackson is our Club's current recipient).

CROE Farewell Dinner: On Friday 30th July the Club will be holding a farewell dinner for Campbelltown Rotary Outback Experience (CROE) participants and supporters. Cost will be $25 per person. Mal Hansen will be collecting names and money next Monday.

The Club Raffle raised $206.00 at the Changeover Dinner. Many thanks to Barry and Pat Donaldson.

2003/2004 - 2004/2005 Changeover Dinner

President Bob welcomed seventy Club members, their partners, 2004/2005 District Governor, Euan Miller and his wife Jill, representatives of other Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs, our supporters and friends to our 38th Changeover Dinner. Bob outlined the highlights and successes of the past year and he especially recognised the valuable contributions of many Club members.

Bob then spoke about the special achievements of each Director and each major project. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions made through the many less obvious but still important activities. (A summary is on the first page of this Newsletter and full details will be printed in the forthcoming Annual Report.)

The incoming District Governor, Euan Miller told us about the exciting plans now being finalised to celebrate Rotary's 100th year next February. Many of the Adelaide festivities will be jointly provided by Districts 9500 and 9520. Highlights will include a dinner in the Convention Centre featuring a video link to the President of Rotary International, Glenn E. Estess, Sr., a family picnic and a multi-faith church service followed by a street march to a meal to be held in the grounds of Government House.

President Bob presented the five newest Club members with framed copies of the "Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions". (A copy of the declaration is included later in this Newsletter.)  Bob said that, depending on his gardening skills, his presentation to the partners of these members will be made after the special flowers have germinated next spring.

Other speakers included the Mayor of the Campbelltown Council, our honorary member, Steve Woodcock. Peter Rumbelow kept all speakers on time in his role as Master of Ceremonies.

The 2003/2004 President, Bob Northcote inducted Dean Fleming as the President for 2004/2005. Before outlining his plans for the coming year, President Dean acknowledged the excellent preparatory work done by Brian Stevens. Dean then introduced the incoming Directors and Officers of the Club for 2004/2005. The new Directors then announced the members of their committees.

The evening concluded with incoming President Dean thanking Bob for his achievements as President for 2003/2004.

Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions

The Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called for in the Object of Rotary:

As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to:

  • Consider my vocation to be another opportunity to serve;
  • Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community;
  • Do all in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation;
  • Be fair to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship;
  • Recognise the honour and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society;
  • Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;
  • Adhere to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession;
  • Neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

Become a ROTARY CENTURION

Most of us would agree that Rotary has enabled us to become better human beings. Without Rotary in our lives, we might not give quite as much of ourselves. The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation with a mission to support the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs.

The Rotary Foundation is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

We can assist the Rotary Foundation by joining the Annual Program Fund as a Centurion. A minimum of AUD$100 (tax deductible) annual commitment provides recognition as a Rotary Centurion, and USD$100 provides additional recognition as a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member (RFSM).

By becoming a Centurion, you could give sight to three people in India, furnish a classroom in Africa, or provide mosquito nets for a Pacific Islands Village. $100 per annum is, of course, equal to $2 per week - think of it as donating 30 cents per day to the good works of Rotary.
