Rotary Youth Leadership
Awards Conference April 2003
During the seven days, they totally focussed on learning new skills
in areas such as communication skills, public speaking, financial management,
goal setting and time management. Phil Hoffman, an experienced and successful
Adelaide businessman, provided many insights into how to take the opportunity
to learn from what others have learnt. A critical issue is to ensure
that a balance is achieved between work commitments and those necessary
to ensure that personal relationships are nurtured. Non-conference room
activities included a bush dance and a night orienteering exercise around
Belair. The in-house daily newspaper provided interesting commentaries
on each day's activities.
The plight of the needy was also
considered during a talk on Adelaide's homeless and disadvantaged people.
An Afghanistan woman, who had been held in Woomera, also spoke on the
pressures of being a refugee in Australia. A memorable moment was when
an extract from Audrey Hepburn's "Beauty Tips" poem to children was
