Premier's Awards for Community Service Projects

SERVICE CLUB WEEK 13 - 18 OCTOBER, 2008

Each year the Government of South Australia focuses media and public attention on the work being done by Service Organisations by presenting the Premier's Community Service Project Awards and the Heide Taylor Community Service Medal. All service clubs are encouraged to nominate for these awards. The major prize is the Premier's Distinction Award for an outstanding project in any Project Award category. Entries for this award must involve one or more Service Clubs. The value of this award is $2000.

The Heide Taylor Community Service Medal will be awarded to an individual who has rendered outstanding voluntary service to the South Australian community. Nominees are not required to be a Service Club member.

Project Awards will be given in nine categories. In each category, the winning project will:

  • Have a large impact
  • Be of long-term benefit
  • Provide assistance to disadvantaged members of the community

The winning project in each category will receive a certificate and a prize of $500. Runners-up will receive a certificate and a prize of $100. Subsidiary awards of the same value may also be made to entries from clubs with fewer than 20 members.

The Project Award categories are:

A. TEAM AWARD, for a co-operative project between two or more Service Clubs.
B. CATALYST AWARD, for an ongoing club initiative that has grown to include other community groups. The project should not be an event, fair or concert.
C. HEALTH AWARD, for a health project for either men, women or both men and women of any age but not children.
D. YOUTH AWARD, for a project to assist youth with health or career issues.
E. SOCIAL INCLUSION AWARD, for a project that works to integrate minority or disadvantaged groups into the wider community.
F. EVENT AWARD, for an event from which members of the community will be assisted.
G. LITERACY AWARD, for a project which helps people or individuals obtain literacy skills.
H. CIVIC IMPROVEMENT AWARD, for a project that improves or provides amenities in the community.
I. ENVIRONMENT AWARD, for a project which improves the natural environment in a community.

Entries for Project Awards must involve one or more Service Clubs. Joint projects are eligible. Projects may be completed or in progress, but must be beyond the planning or pilot study phase. Winning projects from 2007 may not be resubmitted in 2008. The judging panel for the awards consists of the ACSO Committee plus at least one non-Service Club member. Entries may be re-categorised by the judging panel where appropriate. Awards may be shared between entries at the judging panel's discretion.

Some major projects that the Rotary Club of Burnside is involved with.

HELENA GOLDIE HOSPITAL PROJECT

A $1M+ club project of assistance to upgrade the local hospital at Munda in the Solomon Islands.

ORIGINS OF THE HELENA GOLDIE HOSPITAL PROJECT

The hospital celebrated its centenary in 2002, and has served the Western Province of the Solomon Islands for over 100 years. However the present poor state of repair of the Hospital is the result of many factors including two World Wars, adverse weather, irregular maintenance, two recent political upheavals and the passage of time.

Over the past 15 years more than 30 Rotary Clubs have visited Munda and the hospital contributing to repairs and maintenance on a piecemeal basis. Rotary Club of Burnside was the most recent of these in June 2005 when we completed a Rotary Against Malaria (RAM) project in Munda village.

It was following this visit that a detailed, costed proposal for a long term repair and maintenance program was developed by Rotarian John Caddy and others. It has passed the hurdles of acceptance by the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) Central Zone Committee, endorsement by the Solomon Islands Department of Health, and now allocation of a RAWCS Project Approval Number. We can now publicise the project more widely and begin fundraising.
