Things you Need to Know
.

What you will Need -

If you are planning to initiate a native plant propagation project, the information contained in this "New Shadehouse' section will assist you considerably.

Erecting a structure suitable to the task of raising seedlings is probably the most significant aspect of the project and is dealt with in some details in the other points in this section.

Other equipment required.

Gro-Tubes

- this is the type of plant container preferred by revegetation groups and there is no advantage in growing-on your plants to larger pots.

You should try as much as possible to have the empty tubes returned from the group who used the plants. Tubes are reusable if washed and will save you buying more if returned.

If you need to buy Gro-tubes you will find suppliers listed in the Yellow Pages under Nurseries' suppliers.

  .
Growing media or potting mix Always buy the best you can as the quality of the mix makes a very big difference to the vigour and health of your seedlings. There is much more information about potting mixes in the relevant section of the Instruction Manual.
  .
Seeds of appropriate species and correct provenance

This is an important consideration - you want to know that after all the effort of growing your seedlings that they will find a home in a revegetation project.

Appropriate species are locally native species, those that are originally from your district.

Correct provenance is seed collected from remnant vegetation around your district. If the seed is collected from other districts or bought from a seed merchant, your revegetation group may not be able to use the resultant seedlings.

Your local Greening Australia officer, Landcare Co-ordinator or local government Bushcare officer will be able to advise on this. See 'Contact people and Organisations' in this section for contact details.

  .
Important Information

Your Instruction Manual, Teacher's Resource Kit and list of contacts and suppliers are vital pieces of information in the running and management of the shadehouse. If you are transferring or going on leave or in a similar situation where another person will be taking on the running of the shadehouse, it is essential that the necessary information will b available to them.

Please keep the relevant information and documents together in a file clearly marked "Trees for Survival - Shadehouse" or "Environment Club - Shadehouse" or however the project is named.
