Twists and deformities in the taproot will lead to eventual death of plant after 18 - 36 months. These deformities result from incorrect 'picking out' or transplantation stage. Sowing seed 'direct-to-tube' is the easiest way to avoid this common problem.

 

Liverworts and algaes grown on soil surface
usually indicates not enough light and/or too much water. Note the long length of stem between leaves, indicating insufficient light.
